ALPS Develops MOST Connector for Automotive Short-Range Optical Communications
Compatible with Two Supply Voltages
Duesseldorf, Germany, March 05, 2009 - ALPS ELECTRIC has developed the FLTM1G1 Series, a Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST™) connector for automotive short-range optical communications.

In recent years, the in-car use of such devices as audio equipment, navigation systems, mobile phones and DVD players has been gaining in popularity. In addition, automobiles are being increasingly equipped with visual driving aids, such as rearview cameras and night-vision camera systems. As a result, these developments have necessitated the in-car processing of various types of information: audio, still images and video. The optical communications system known as MOST™ was established in Europe to standardize the specifications of in-car information processing networks. Today, European automakers are gradually utilizing MOST™ primarily for in-car devices, but a rapid proliferation is expected thanks to its ability to streamline networks, increase communication speed and reduce electromagnetic noise.

Designed for automotive short-range optical communication applications, the FLTM1G1 Series connector conforms to the 2+0 type MOST™ 1.1 standard. At a compact 25.20mm wide, 26.45mm deep and 13.00mm high, the FLTM1G1 Series is compatible with both 5V and 3.3V supply voltages, thereby contributing to freedom of circuit design.

Furthermore, ALPS ELECTRIC aspherical lenses are utilized in the optical fiber cabling and couplings of the FLTM1G1 Series. These lenses, which draw fully on ALPS ELECTRIC's proprietary optical simulation, flow analysis and precision molding technologies, strike a balance between formability and optical performance, achieve stable optical characteristics for excellent light-coupling efficiency and reduce the likelihood of optical fiber displacement.

In addition, the casing that forms the connecting component is made of highly heat-resistant, hazardous-material-free plastic. The housing case's ability to withstand high temperatures enables the use of a flow soldering method with a solder bath, a process that has been impossible in the manufacture of existing types.

Covering the FLTM1G1 Series connector with a one-piece, sealed, metallic shield reduces noise and thereby prevents external electromagnetic interference.
