ALPS Green Devices Develops “GLMH Series” Liqualloy™ Power Inductor |
Industry-Leading High Efficiency* |
Duesseldorf, Germany, September 17, 2012 – ALPS Green Devices Co., Ltd. has developed the GLMH Series Liqualloy™ Power Inductor, ideal for mobile devices used for long periods. Samples will be available from September. Mobile computing devices such as Ultrabooks, other types of notebook PC, and tablets are now essential to our lifestyles. A recent requirement of these devices, besides light weight and advanced functionality, is the ability to run for long periods. Enabling mobile equipment to run for a long time entails lowering the power consumption of not only the CPU and the various devices, but also the DC/DC converter, used to supply power after converting voltage. This creates a need for high-efficiency power inductors, which are used inside DC/DC converters. However, an issue with power inductors so far has been power conversion efficiency during low-load CPU operation. ALPS Green Devices has responded by developing the GLMH Series Liqualloy™ Power Inductor with industry-leading high efficiency. Liqualloy™, the inductor’s core material, is a magnetic amorphous alloy created through joint research between ALPS Electric and Tohoku University. It is drawing interest as a new magnetic material to use in place of the most common core material, ferrite, and the second most common, iron powder. Using Liqualloy as the inductor’s core material allows minimization of power loss during conversion, thereby enabling high efficiency especially during low-load operation. The GLMH Series also employs an integrated coil-terminal structure, applying original technology for high-precision forging of thin coil wire. With the coil wire doubling as the terminals, DC resistance is reduced by 10 to 20% compared to conventional types with the same level of inductance. This structure keeps DC resistance tolerance to a narrow ±5% and reduces heat generation during high-load operation, thereby further improving on the high current compatibility of earlier products. The GLMH Series complements the popular GLMC Series and GLMD Series in a line-up tailored to diverse market needs. *ALPS Green Devices research as of September 12, 2012 Features Liqualloy™ Power Inductor ideal for Ultrabooks and other mobile computing devices
