ALPS Electric Publishes 2005 Social & Environmental Report
Includes Both Environmental and Social Responsibility Information for the First Time
Düsseldorf, July 11, 2005 – ALPS Electric has published its 2005 Social & Environmental Report, detailing its social responsibility and environmental protection activities for fiscal 2004. This report compiles for the first time information on both environmental protection, which was previously published in the Company’s Environmental Reports, and social responsibility programs involving Alps and its stakeholders.

In addition to information on environmental protection activities, this report discusses Alps’ approach to corporate governance, which is intended to benefit stakeholders by raising corporate value, as well as community service, regulatory compliance, risk management, and other management activities.

We are publishing a Chinese version of this report for the first time with this edition. It will be released in the middle of August.

The report also discusses the following environmental activities, called for in Alps’ Fourth Medium-Term Voluntary Action Plan for Environmental Protection (effective from fiscal 2003 through fiscal 2005).
  • Achieved zero-emissions in fiscal 2004
  • Completely eliminated cadmium and hexavalent chromium from all products; and all lead with the exception of surface treatment of narrow pitches in line with measures to deal with whiskers.
  • Received ISO 14001 certification of the environmental management systems at 19 of 20 domestic and overseas locations.
The following activities for stakeholder benefit are covered in the Social Report section.
  • Relations with customers: Proposal-based sales activities and an exacting quality management system to heighten customer satisfaction
  • Relations with employees: Displaying respect for the individual, developing human resources on a global scale, and creating a work environment in which each individual can express his or her own abilities
  • Relations with shareholders: Sincerely maintaining smooth communication; disclosing appropriate information in a timely manner through written reports, the Company’s Web site, and other means
  • Relations with suppliers: Move forward with green procurement on a global basis, as a partner
  • Interaction with local communities: Maintain lively exchange with local communities around the world through such activities as monozukuri classes* and the establishment of scholarships.
While continuing to provide the ultimate fine electronic devices, Alps is meeting its responsibilities to “Spaceship Earth”** in terms of social responsibility, environmental protection, and in a number of other ways.

* These are classes in which we, as a maker of electronics components, give children of various communities the opportunity to make things like robots, radios, and model airplanes. Our hope is to communicate to them the pleasure to be found in making useful things.

** Propounded by Buckminster Fuller in his 1969 book, Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth.
