HUSUM WindEnergy 2012: Maritime premiere at Pfaff-silberblau: Electromechanical jib crane for use on the open sea

Reliable lifting performance in spite of wind, weather and birds on offshore/ nearshore wind energy plants, drilling and production platforms, harbour  installations and ships

Kissing/Germany, 18 September 2012 - Columbus McKinnon Engineered Products GmbH, Kissing/Germany, is now also venturing into the open sea with an entirely new product: A new electromechanical crane made by Pfaff-silberblau with a jib length of up to 12 m lifts loads of up to 5 tonnes in nearshore and offshore applications. Its special design with flexible lifting, level luffing and slewing speeds allows ships to be loaded and unloaded safely also in rough seas. The crane can be installed as a working crane for transporting maintenance material and service personnel to foundations of offshore and nearshore wind energy plants, oil and natural gas platforms, as well as also in harbour installations and on board ships. “Clean” alternative to hydraulic cranes The electromechanical crane from Pfaff-silberblau is far superior to standard hydraulic cranes. Thanks to its special design and its corrosion-resistant components plus the high-quality workmanship, it not only affords a high level of availability, but also ensures low maintenance costs coupled with a long service life. Thanks to its ‘clean’ electromechanical system without hydraulic oils, which can escape and pollute the environment, the new crane also protects the marine ecology. Reliable, powerful and robust Essentially, the new crane from Pfaff-silberblau is composed of a screw jack element for adjusting the jib, a wire rope winch for lifting and lowering the loads plus a slewing drive for rotating. The screw jack element is taken from Pfaff-silberblau’s proven modular construction system. Thanks to its self-locking device in the gearbox and spindle, it prevents the jib from being lowered unintentionally. These ultra safe construction solutions for which Pfaff-silberblau is well-known also incorporate an additional spring-actuated brake, which also ensures exceptional positioning accuracy. The wire rope winch for lifting and lowering the loads is integrated inside the crane, where it is reliably protected against aggressive environmental influences, such as salt water and bird droppings, for example. An overload protection in the crane’s controller prevents damage to the lifting element and the wire rope winch due to heavy loads. The slewing motion of the crane is ensured by an approved ball bearing slewing rim with a drive motor. The electrical drives permit different lifting, level luffing and slewing speeds to balance out the swell of the vessel during loading and unloading. The higher the waves, the higher the lifting speeds. Long service life thanks to corrosion protection The crane has been specially developed for offshore applications. All the mechanical and electrical components feature special corrosion protection and are protected with a hard-wearing surface coating. As such, the new offshore crane satisfies the high requirements with regard to the long service lives expected in the maritime sector. Multi-variant for every application The crane from Pfaff-silberblau is available in various versions, namely from a hand crane with a fixed jib, which is actuated by hand winch and manual slewing drive, through to a fully electrically operated crane with radio remote control. The crane is supplied as a complete service, which includes the design, manufacturing, assembly, acceptance and commissioning in addition to training sessions and service and maintenance work also offshore. The new offshore crane from Pfaff-silberblau is accepted by all the recognised institutes such as Germanischer Lloyd, TÜV, Det Norske Veritas and Lloyd's Register Group.
