Reliable and Compact Mini-Backplanes |
ERNI Electronics presents backplane demonstrators based on SMC connectors in press-fit technology |
Adelberg, 24th November 2009 - ERNI Electronics has combined its comprehensive expertise in press-fit technology with the popular SMC connector family. The company is presenting “mini-backplanes” based on the double-row SMC components with 1.27mm pitch, to demonstrate the capabilities of this powerful and flexible connector family. With their high contact density and low space requirement, SMC connectors provide maximum design flexibility. This series addresses many different compact mezzanine, board-to-board and board-to-cable applications. With an appropriate design layout, these fine-pitch connectors can reliably transmit signals with data rates of more than 1Gbps. As well as SMT versions (straight and angled), straight male connectors (type Q with 12, 26, 50, 68 and 80 pins and an overall height of 3.25mm) are available with press-fit technology. These press-fit versions of the SMC male connector are ideal for use on backplanes. Based on the SMC male connectors with press-fit terminals on the PCB side, ERNI has now produced extremely compact demo backplanes that combine the performance features of the connectors and the extremely reliable press-fit technology. This makes it possible to create miniaturised, robust backplane solutions for extremely compact systems in harsh industrial environments. ERNI Electronics is presenting example implementations of SMC mini-backplanes on its stand (Hall 6, Stand 260) at SPS/IPC/DRIVES in Nuremberg (24th to 26th November 2009). About the SMC family The SMC family with 1.27mm pitch is predestined for sophisticated subsystem applications, and makes it possible to produce a wide range of PCB solutions. Different modules such as straight and angled male and female connectors in combination with SMT terminals and straight male connectors with press-fit technology provide the user with maximum design flexibility for all of the PCB configurations that are required (coplanar, mezzanine or orthogonal), The connectors with their precise contacts are manufactured on state-of-the art fully automatic manufacturing facilities with visual inspection (100% AOI) and exact coplanarity (tolerance of less than 0.1mm) for reliable soldering. The distance and positioning of the contacts are 100% monitored. Different combinations of standard and low-profile versions allow board stacking heights from 8.0mm to 20.0mm. In conjunction with adapters, the SMC product range covers PCB distances of 8.0 to 40.0mm. The SMC product range has been optimised for fully automatic processing. |
