Infineon Reinforces its Leadership in RF by Presenting Two New CMOS RF-Transceivers for EDGE and Multimode-3G Mobile Phones
Munich, Germany, February 8, 2007 - Infineon Technologies, a leading provider of communication ICs, today presented two new single-chip RF CMOS transceivers.  SMARTi® PM+ and SMARTi® UE set new benchmarks in terms of miniaturization, integration and power efficiency for both of the fastest growing mobile phone market segments, EDGE and multi-mode 3G.

Global shipments of GPRS / EDGE enabled mobile phones are expected to grow from more than 350 million units in 2007 to 550 million units in 2010, according to the market research firm Strategy Analytics.  The firm further predicts that the market for 3G mobile phones will soar from 150 million units in 2007 to more than half a billion in 2010 as consumers demand multimedia content, services, and high speed Internet access.

Infineon displays samples and reference boards for the SMARTi-PM+ and SMARTi UE in its booth at the 3GSM World Congress, Hall 1, Stand B19.

SMARTi PM+: World’s Smallest GPRS/ EDGE Quadband RF CMOS Transceiver

The SMARTi PM+ is the world’s smallest quad-band RF transceiver for GPRS / EDGE, measuring just 3 x 3 x0.8 mm in a wafer level package.  The small size effectively cuts the footprint of the entire EDGE radio by half to just 100 square millimeters, the size of a fingertip, a revolutionary step in cost reduction and miniaturization for handset OEMs. Based on the mature and proven architecture of the widely-adopted SMARTi PM, the SMARTi PM+ is compatible with existing mobile phone platforms and all major basebands.  Two top mobile phone manufacturers have already selected SMARTi PM+ for their latest EDGE handsets.

The SMARTi PM+ supports GPRS Class 12 and EDGE Type 1 with best-in-class sensitivity and EVM performance.  The transceiver includes integrated DCXO, loop filter and voltage regulators, and uses small signal polar modulation architecture for compatibility with standard low-cost linear power amplifiers available from all leading PA vendors.  Samples are available now and production will start in summer 2007.

SMARTi UE: World’s First Single Chip EDGE/UMTS RF Transceiver with DigRF Baseband Interface

The SMARTi UE is the world’s first single-chip UMTS / EDGE RF transceiver that supports the latest DigRF 3.09 specification for the transceiver-to-baseband interface.  By using the SMARTi UE, which incorporates analog baseband functions such as analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion, OEMs can use a single low-cost digital baseband IC instead of a more costly and complex analog-digital baseband.  Purely digital basebands have a smaller size than analog-digital basebands, and offer a faster path to even smaller size through Moore’s Law.

SMARTi UE supports HSDPA and HSUPA, three UMTS bands out of UMTS Bands I through X, as well as quad-band EDGE.  The package measures 6 x 6 mm, significantly smaller than the first generation of single-chip W-EDGE and H-EDGE transceivers, which typically measure 7 x 7 mm or more.  With external components, the complete radio solution with SMARTi UE measures approximately 400 square millimeters, about half the size of previous solutions.

With support for multimedia features through HSDPA / HSUPA, and with the ability to operate in frequency bands around the globe, SMARTi UE is the perfect device for new low cost 3G multimedia handsets.  Infineon has shipped samples of the SMARTi UE to tier one mobile phone manufacturers, and will begin production in the second half of 2007

According to Chris Taylor, Director of RF & Wireless Components at Strategy Analytics, “Infineon is the market leader in handset transceivers with more than 230 million units shipped last year.  As the top handset makers move to EDGE, H-EDGE and DigRF over the next two years, Infineon intends to stay at the head of the pack.”

“Infineon regards miniaturization, time to market and continuous cost reduction as major contributors to the success of our customers”, stated Prof. Dr. Hermann Eul, Executive Vice President and member of the Infineon Management Board and President of the Communication Solutions business group. “SMARTi PM+ and SMARTi UE demonstrate our technical and commercial leadership in RF which is directly reflected by new design-wins at tier one OEMs.”

Infineon manufactures both new members of the Infineon SMARTi RF transceiver family, the SMARTi PM+ and SMARTi UE, in its 130 nm CMOS process for robust performance, lowest cost and best supply flexibility for high volume shipments.
