Infineon Offers Ultra-Low-Cost 3-in-1 Evaluation Platform to Provide Engineers With Fast-Track to Evaluate Three Infineon 8-Bit MCUs
Neubiberg, Germany – July 11, 2007 – Infineon Technologies AG (FSE/NYSE: IFX) today announced a very-low-cost evaluation kit for the company’s XC800 8-bit embedded-flash microcontroller (MCU) family. The new XC800 USCALE kit is contained in a USB (Universal Serial Bus) stick that provides full evaluation capabilities for the XC866, XC886 and XC888 MCUs on a single platform.

The USCALE kit offers access to the key features – such as CAN (Controller Area Network), A/D converter, capture compare unit, timers and vector computer for field oriented control – and to the hardware signals of each of the three MCUs for extensive benchmarking and evaluation. It ensures quick installation and ease-of-use due to its development tool chains, demos and tutorials.

Infineon’s high-performance XC800 series of MCUs combine an enhanced 8051 core with embedded flash memory and powerful on-chip peripherals. The three MCUs supported in the USCALE kit are well-suited for a wide range of different applications, including motor control, automotive body and white goods, and are adding networking functionality to industrial and building automation systems.

Technical Information on the XC866 MCU Series

Performance and cost-saving features of the XC866 MCU series include a 26.67 MHz system frequency, 4 Kbyte (KB) up to 16 KB flash memory, an on-chip oscillator and PLL for clock generation, an embedded voltage regulator supporting single voltage supply of 3.3V or 5.0V, and EEPROM support. The enhanced PWM unit offers advanced features including integrated dead-time control, emergency-OFF control, direct hall-sensor inputs and a tight coupling with ADC for automatic triggering. The 10-bit ADC with a conversion time of only 1.5µs offers advanced features like auto-scan and comparator modes. The Infineon XC866 also offers a rich set of communication interfaces including LIN, SSC and UART. The XC866 is available in a RoHS compatible TSSOP-38 package with a temperature range of up to 140°C to offer 27 general purpose I/Os with an extremely small footprint of 9.7 mm x 4.4 mm.

Technical Information on the XC886 and XC888 MCU Series

The XC886 and XC888 MCUs, both with up to 32KB flash memory, provide advanced networking capabilities, based on integration of both a full CAN controller and LIN support on a single chip. The on-chip CAN module offloads the CPU handling most of the networking functions. Advanced features of the XC886 and XC888 MCUs include high compute power supported by a 16-bit multiply and divide unit (MDU) for fast mathematical computation and a CORDIC (COrdinate Rotation Digital Computer) unit at a 16-bit co-processor dedicated for vector rotation angular calculations (for field oriented motor control). Additional key features are an intelligent PWM unit, a highly accurate 8-channel, 10-bit A/D converter with fast conversion speed, and a high-performance capture compare unit with two independent 16-bit timers dedicated to PWM generation offering 16-bit motor control performance at 8-bit costs.
