Practical Dual Pack in Volume Production: Infineon TLE4966V Hall Sensor with Two Vertical Hall Plates Measures Rotation Speed and Direction
Neubiberg and Nuremberg, Germany – June 4, 2014 – In the future, power window lift and power trunk lift system design will be completely transformed; other automotive applications with space restrictions, such as sun roofs and seat adjustment, will also benefit.

Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) makes this possible with its TLE4966V, a vertical dual-Hall sensor. The dual-Hall sensor supplies information on rotation direction and speed; previously this has required two sensors. This reduces sensor costs for system manufacturers by an average of 30 percent and lowers test and manufacturing time by up to 50 percent. With power consumption of 4mA to 7mA, the TLE4966V is well-suited for energy-sensitive electronic automotive systems and also for escalators, and electric shades and blinds. As the market leader for automotive sensors, Infineon set the industry standard for power car window lifts with the predecessor product, the TLE4966.

The kick-off for volume production of the TLE4966V is at the leading international fair for sensorics, measuring and testing technology, ”Sensor+Test 2014” (Nuremberg, June 3-5, 2014).

TLE4966V simplifies PCB design and lowers test and manufacturing costs

For the TLE4966V, Infineon changed the orientation of the two Hall plates from horizontal to vertical. This makes it possible for the TLE4966V to detect in-plane magnetic fields and supply information on rotation direction and speed, for which two sensors have previously been required. Over their entire lifetime, the two integrated vertical Hall plates on one silicon die have the same temperature and stress behavior with no sensitivity deviation.

Due to the distance between the two Hall plates, they detect slightly shifted signals at any designated time. During a rotation direction change, the phase difference changes polarity. The TLE4966V detects this change and delivers a corresponding signal. It has two signal outputs: one signal for the pole wheel rotation direction and the other for measuring the magnetic pole wheel rotation speed. This signal is triggered by each polarity change of the magnetic field.

The TLE4966V performs on-chip signal processing, which offers major advantages for the system designer: the sensor provides the information within a mere 20µs and the microcontroller does not have to be programmed. There are thus no programming errors, which results in higher system quality. The TLE4966V allows operation from an unregulated power supply and works with systems from 3.5V to 32V.

TLE4966V in high volume

Production launch of the TLE4966V is June 2014. It comes in a Thin Small Outline Package with 6 pins (TSOP-6).

Infineon at Sensor+Test 2014 (June 3-5, 2014, Nuremberg)

Infineon will be presenting the TLE4966V and its portfolio of Hall and pressure sensors for automotive and industry applications at the Sensor+Test 2014 trade fair in Hall 12, Stand 238.

Infineon supplies a broad portfolio of sensors for automotive and industry applications

Infineon’s Hall switch sensor portfolio comprises unipolar and omnipolar switches and bipolar latches for e.g. BLDC motor control, position sensing and index counting. They are designed for low power consumption, excellent magnetic accuracy and robustness against electrical disturbances. Infineon’s Hall switches feature voltage interface (open drain) or two-wire current interfaces. The sensors come in small SMD and slim leaded packages for high design flexibility.
