Infineon launches single chip TV Tuner IC with integrated RF and IF functions that offers lower power consumption, half the footprint area with a superior cost position
Munich, Germany – June 22, 2006 – Infineon Technologies AG (FSE/NYSE: IFX), a leading supplier of TV tuner ICs, introduced today an economic, low power tuner IC, Taifun TUA6039. The TUA6039 integrates the complete RF (Radio Frequency) and IF (Intermediate Frequency) functions on a single chip, leading the evolution of smaller and more cost effective digital TV tuner ICs without compromise to performance.

The TUA6039 has only half the footprint area of the conventional RF + IF tuner solution. The highly integrated IC provides a reliable solution for tuner, set-top box and TV manufacturers, offering a 50 percent reduction in board space and power consumption compared to previous generation. This makes the TUA6039 an ideal upgrade path for customers that are currently using Infineon`s two-chip solution, consisting of TUA6034 (RF multimedia tuner) and TDA6192 (IF amplifier).

The TUA6039 is manufactured using a bi-polar process and is well-suited for stationary broadcast receivers where both low cost and lower power consumption are major design requirements in this highly competitive market. TUA6039 is a full 3-band RF tuner IC with integrated IF AGC (Automatic Gain Control) amplifier and PLL. This low power tuner IC operates between 3V and 5V supply voltage with a power consumption of only 330mW (typical) compared to about 600mW for similar competing solutions. The high level of system integration enables more cost effective tuner solutions and reduces development cycle times that allows for faster time to market.  All major analog and digital standards for terrestrial and cable applications like PAL, SECAM, NTSC, DVB-C, DVB-T, T-DMB, DAB, ISDB-T and ATSC are supported by TUA6039.

The flexibility to operate at supply voltages ranging from 5V to 3V allows manufacturers of tuner modules the freedom to adjust the tuner modules to the various receiver system power requirements. System power consumption is further reduced with the build-in stand-by mode function and bus controlled power-down mode.

Infineon has successfully introduced several generations of tuner ICs over the last few decades which have been designed into more than 60 percent of the worldwide digital terrestrial receivers.  In addition, the company’s analog and digital tuner IC’s are used in one of every four TV tuners in the world.  Infineon is leveraging on its RF core competency that ultimately plays a key role in enabling the digital age of terrestrial television.

“The latest market driven trends in developing digital television receivers are the competencies to reduce the footprint of the tuner module while delivering higher performance and lower power consumption at significantly reduced costs,” said Giuseppe Calarco , General Manager of the Tuner Systems business unit at Infineon's communication Solutions business group. “The launch of the TUA6039 shows that Infineon is continuing to expand its expertise in analog and RF chip design and manufacturing to support its customers with strategic products for the TV tuner market.”

Availability

Samples of TUA6039 in Green PG-VQFN-48 packages are already available, with volume production planned for 3rd quarter 2006. Infineon will also make available a complete TV Tuner reference design with TUA6039 that will provide added value to customers by reducing their development costs and time to market. For portable applications requiring extreme low power consumption, Infineon also offers the recently announced TUA 6041/ TUA6045 Tuner ICs using BiCMOS process.
