M12 adapter from PROVERTHA with X to D and D to X coding simplify retrofitting in transportation and railway technology
Pforzheim (Germany) – 10 May 2022 – Provertha has developed a robust and extremely compact M12 adapter solution that allows a M12 plug-in connection with X to D and D to X coding to be made without any additional effort. The adapters with an effective shielding achieved by full metal housing features an X- or D-coded pin interface with a rotating screw lock and a D- or X-coded socket interface with a fixed locking thread. The adapters are simply inserted between the switch and the cable using the usual torque tools. The new M12 adapter make a significant contribution to saving cabling costs and installation time. They are designed in protection class IP 67 and are suitable for reliable data transmission of up to 100 Mbit in the temperature range from -25°C to 85°C.

The X to D coded adapter is particularly advantageous for retrofitting in railway technology, as existing D-coded cabeling can continue to be used, even if the switches have to be replaced by gigabit port switches during overhauls. On the other hand, the X to D coded adapter allows 100 Mbit devices to be connected with Gigabit-cabling systems.

Ethernet capable devices, which need no Gbit Ethernet, normally are equipped with M12 D-code connecters. But new installed Ethernet cablings are already based on X-code technique (4 pairs). The Provertha M12 adapter with D to X coding is combining both to work together via plug & play without further installation expenses.

Conversion in the rail sector to Gigabit ports with X-coded sockets

Ethernet switches have been used for data communication in trains and infotainment in train carriages for years. The trend towards higher data rates is currently also continuing with railway switches. In the course of overhauls, old switches are therefore increasingly replaced with new ones in the carriages. For example, the 100 Mbit ports on the switches are increasingly being replaced by gigabit ports. This means that instead of the D-coded M12 sockets, more X-coded sockets will be used on the switches in future. However, the existing D-coded cabling is to be retained because of the high cost of the X-coded cables. This is why D-coded connectors must match X-coded sockets. The new adapters from Provertha support this connectivity.
