TE Connectivity helps to lead implementation of new SPE connector standards with the PROFIBUS Nutzerorganisation |
As an advocate for Single Pair Ethernet, TE played a key role in the realization of a uniform connector system for PROFINET over SPE |
Galway, Ireland – 12 November, 2024 – TE Connectivity (TE), a world leader in connectors and sensors, is taking a leading role in the PNO (PROFIBUS Nutzerorganisation) to develop an uniform connector for PROFINET over SPE (Single Pair Ethernet) and thus continue the SPE success story in industrial automation. This new standard provides more clarity and security when using SPE technology, also marking an important milestone in which miniaturization will be supported even more effectively in the future. Bringing various concepts together The new connector system requirements, supported by the PNO under the leadership of TE, were presented to the International Electrotechnical Commission for international standardization. The PNO, a member of the umbrella organization PROFIBUS & PROFINET International, is a leader in the development, standardization and dissemination of industrial communication and automation technologies. TE is a key contributor to SPE technology and has been an active supporter of its development from the very beginning. TE has also played a significant role in the current standardization process, further solidifying its position as a leader in the industrial connectivity market. New standard will replace obsolete field bus systems A new connector system being developed to the standard will offer a uniform mating face for applications in the control cabinet, in the field and also for hybrid installations. This paves the way for a universal SPE standard. It will take into account the specifications of IEEE 802.3 and will replace obsolete field bus systems in the future, as it enables more efficient data and power transmission over a single wire pair in high-speed Ethernet communication. This new generation of connectors will be another step toward improved interoperability and integration of different automation systems with SPE in the future, making industrial processes more efficient, reliable and cost-effective. The new connector standard will help ensure seamless communication from the field level to IT systems, in manufacturing, process automation and smart buildings. The future is already here With the unified connector system for PROFINET over SPE, a new standard will offer many advantages for users because it will combine the advantages and potential of both technologies and can play a key role in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). “As an industry standard, PROFINET over SPE can be used to reduce the number of copper wires and the weight of the cabling, while also helping support more efficient communication,“ said Manuel Rüter, senior principal of technology, standardization and consortia at TE. Practical implementation in full swing TE, alongside other manufacturers, is currently working on new products that will meet the PNO requirements. The solution will be usable in all SPE applications independently of PROFINET, even at higher speeds. In addition, standardization work is underway at other levels of SPE communication, e.g. with regard to a new power concept, so that a consistent SPE solution can be achieved across all layers.
